How can we better understand sugar? Through workshops with Caribbean community partners, we learnt that sometimes, to truly share how sugar changed the world, one museum caption isn't enough.

At this intervention in our London, Sugar & Slavery gallery, six objects have been given additional captions written by experts in the study of sugar.

Delve deeper into sugar’s complex history through these new captions and the accompanying booklet, which can be picked up in the gallery or downloaded below.

Not as Sweet as You Think is one outcome of our London Museum research project on sugar. As London Museum relocates in 2026, we're establishing a Research Centre as a trusted hub for London-focused research.

Hooray, you’re coming for free! Why not give a little back and donate today?
