Stylus
An iron stylus. Terminating at one end in a spade-shaped eraser with a rouletted band just above. The other end is pointed with a square piece above the point flanked by two grooved lines. Decorated towards the point end with a band of diagonal grooved lines.
Romans used a metal pen (stylus) to write on wooden tablets covered with a layer of wax. The wax could be smoothed and re-used many times. Numerous tablets could be strung together to form a book.
