Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1815-1820
The Mall, St James's Park
Groups of people are seen strolling along the Mall. St James's Palace and Marlborough House appear between the trees in the background.
The Mall was laid out shortly after the Restoration of the Monarchy for playing a form of croquet called pall-mall, a favourite game of Charles II. Avenues of limes and elms wre also planted around the park and an ornamental canal was constructed. The Mall quickly became London's most fashionable promenade. By Regency times its popularity was waning as Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens became the places to see and be seen.
In 1827 the whole of St James's Park was remodelled by John Nash.
