Gaming at Brooks's Club
A group of gentlemen slump around a circular table. Presumably, it is the early hours of the morning. Play has finished and a chair has been overturned. Judging from his despondent attitude, the man in the foreground has not had a successful evening. At least three of the men are drowsing, the croupier yawns in his high chair and even the dog awaiting his owner's departure is yawning. In the background other members are dining in an alcove.
Gaming was a passion for many at the time, with fortunes made and lost in a night at faro or other games of chance at fashionable clubs such as Brooks's, Crockford's and White's. Rowlandson made at least five drawings of this subject.
