Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1835
Highgate Church from Maiden Lane
This watercolour shows the two small potteries in Belle Isle, off Maiden Lane (now York Road). The most southerly was owned by George Randall and was originally at Bagnigge Wells, Clerkenwell moving to Maiden Lane in the late 1820s.
Both kilns were situated in the valley of the River Fleet which cut into the London clay. When exposed and weathered this wass ideal material for manufacturing tiles and chimney pots to feed 'The March of Bricks and Mortar'.
