The Virgin Mary and Christ Child
A complete medieval lead alloy pilgrim badge, from an unknown shrine, depicting the Virgin Mary and Christ Child in an openwork design. The badge depicts a crowned Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus, standing in a pulpit-like (or crescent-shaped) pelleted band over an open work lattice. Mary supports the Christ Child with her left arm and holds a sceptre in her right hand. The badge has a pointed architectural frame. The base of the frame is decorated with a row of five dots within circles. The reverse of the object has an integrally cast pin and a mould line running the length of it from top to bottom. An almost identical badge is published in Egan, G. (2005): Material culture in London in an age of transition, MOLAS Monograph19, cat. no.1156, pg. 209.
