Old Westminster Bridge
In the mid-19th century, the Thames was effectively a disease bearing swamp. Nonetheless, Whistler produced numerous evocative images of the river and its surroundings, from bridges to riverside haunts. His series of 16 etchings, known as the Thames Set, was completed in 1861. That same year, Whistler made an etching that recorded the building of the new Westminster Bridge.
