Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1763-1866
Print, etching & newspaper cutting
The etching shows a portrait of William Hogarth with his pug, Trump. A serpentine curve appears on the artist's pallet within the words 'The Line of Beauty and Grace'. The print states that Hogarth painted the original work in 1745 and it was etched by J. Mills in 1808. The etching was published by Alex Hog & Co, in 01-02-1808 with the title 'The celebrated William Hogarth, ESQr.'. The ten newspaper cuttings relate to various incidents and accounts; including a number relating to Saville House and it's destruction by fire, the inhabitants of Newton's House in St. Martin's Street, the sale of the Great Globe in Leicester Square and a description of a 'Scene in Leicester Square' which involved the public decorating a statue of George II with comical items which include 'a huge hat'.
