This watercolour illustrates the spectacle of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition held every June in which th epublic could view a large number of recently produced oil paintings. This scene shows the Great Room, the largest space in the Academy.
Sir Thomas Lawrence was the President of the Academy at this time(until 1830) and several of his portraits are shown hanging on the walls. On the far right is shown Frances, Lady Londonderry with her son.
