Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1771-1772
A farm with a timber yard, on the top of Newman Street
Taken on the top of Newman Street behind Middlesex Hospital, a timber yard can be seen in the foreground. Inscribed on the back 4 Feb 95 [poss by the purchasor, who acquired these leaves after Grimm's death in 1774 ?]. The leaf is from a sketch book and is inscribed June 12th, no. 50 in the top right hand corner. This item also bears the collector's mark of Sir Bruce Ingram (editor of the Illustrated London News) who died in 1963. According RM Clay, Samuel Hieronymus Grimm (London, 1942), these sketches come fro a sketch book with a title page 'Studies from Mature by S. H. Grimm vol XII - begun ye 8th of July 1771, finished ye 20th September 1772.' (p. 68). There are other leaves in the Guildhall, Prints & Drawings Department.
