A view of the new river water mill at Islington
A view of the New River Head mill at Islington. With monogram AS and dated in RH corner.
Until the early 17th century, London's water supply was derived partly from the springs surrounding the city, and principally from the Thames. In 1613, Sir Hugh Myddelton completed a New River, with its source in Hertfordshire to supply water to the city. The main reservoir and offices of the company were in Islington, still the HQ of the Metropolitan Water Board today. On the LHS is part of the main reservoir and on the right the horse-mill which pumped the water, and stables for the horses.
