The death and burning of the most constant Martyrs in Christ, D Robert Barnes, Thomas Garret, and William Hierome in Smithfield, an. 1541.
Woodcut showing the martyrdom of Barnes, Garret and Hierome in 1541. Cardinal Wolsey' agents tried to prevent English language Bibles arriving from Europe but thousands were smuggled into London. Robert Barnes sold Tyndale's New Testament from his house in the Austin Friary, and Thomas Garret supplied them to the universities. Both men were caught and suffered martyrs' deaths at Smithfield by being burnt at the stake.
