Lady Burdett-Coutts delivering Columbia Market to the Lord Mayor
Baroness Burdett-Coutts conceived and financed Columbia market as a philanthropic attempt to take the costermongers off the streets. Designed by H.A. Darbishire, it opened in 1869 just east of Shoreditch Church and Hackney Road and was said to have cost £200,000. The scheme failed and the market was demolished in 1958.
