Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1840
Charlotte Charke as 'Scrub'
Charlotte Charke was born in 1716, the youngest daughter of Colley Cibber, the poet laureate. Aged 17 she left her husband to earn her living on the London stage. She played both male and female parts throughout her career and cross-dressed in public. In 1755, Charke's memoirs appeared as a serial. She wrote of a long term friendship with an actress during which they lived together as Mr. and Mrs. Brown. The memoirs fell into obscurity until they were reprinted in the 19th century by Emily Faithfull, the feminist publisher.
