Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1826
Hanover Terrace
Thomas H Shepherd (1792-1864) was a well known watercolour artist who specialised in topographical views. This watercolour of Hanover Square was begun in 1826 and was reproduced in ‘Metropolitan Improvements’ 1827 by T H Shepherd & James Elmes.
In the text Hanover Square was described as a handsome row of houses designed by Nash. The centre and the two wing buildings were of the Doric order; the central buiding had a pediment topped with statues described as made in ‘a wretched style of art, which the architect would do well to remove’. The figures were also commented upon, ‘the bevy of fair demoiselles‘ who were ‘accompanied by the gentle cavaliers…with beaming eyes and rejoicing hearts’.
This was a fashionable area, recently redeveloped which led to a popoular promenade in Regent’s Park.
