Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1826
Macclesfield Bridge, Regent's Park
Built as part of the construction of Regent’s park in the 1820s, Macclesfield Bridge crosses Regent’s Canal and forms one of the entrances to Regent’s Park. It was named after Charles Gerard, 1st Earl of Macclesfield, who was the Chairman of the Regent’s Canal Company. In 1874 the bridge was destroyed when a barge that was carrying gunpowder exploded beneath it. The bridge was rebuilt in 1876 reusing the original iron columns. This wash drawing was made as an illustration for Thomas Hosmer Shepherd’s book ‘Metropolitan Improvements’ (1827-30), which included many images of Regent’s Park and the nearby developments.
