Christ Church and part of Christ Hospital

Thomas Hosmer Shepherd’s wash drawing – made for his book, ‘London in the Nineteenth Century’ (1829-31) – depicts Christ Church, Newgate Street with Christ Hospital School to the left. The original church had belonged to the Grey Friars, but was made a parish church during the Reformation. This burned down in the Great Fire of London and was replaced by a smaller structure designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The school relocated to Horsham in the early twentieth century, and most of the church was destroyed in the Blitz, although the tower remains and the ruins have become a public garden.
