Cornhill and Lombard Street from Poultry
Looking west from the street called Poultry, at the eastern end of Cheapside in the financial district of the City, this wash drawing depicts the view down Cornhill on the left and Lombard Street on the right. The spire and part of the portico of the Royal Exchange building can be seen at the left with the turreted tower of St Michael, Cornhill to the right. Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, who drew this view for his book, ‘London in the Nineteenth Century’ (1829-31), considered the view, with its ‘combination of architectural splendour [...], gay shops, and an ever-moving throng of carriages and pedestrians’ to be ‘very picturesque’.
