Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1828
New Corn Exchange, Mark Lane
The original Corn Exchange building was built in Mark Lane in 1747. Thomas Hosmer Shepherd’s wash drawing shows the partly rebuilt Exchange of 1827 with its neoclassical frontage designed by George Smith, and the New Corn Exchange built next door in 1828. Further modifications were made in 1850 and 1929, and the edifice was rebuilt in 1954 after suffering bomb damage in the Blitz. The building has now been remodelled as an office block and the Corn Exchange has moved to the Baltic Exchange at St Mary Axe. As well as a cart heavily loaded with bags of corn, Shepherd’s drawing includes a homeless man sitting beneath a bill poster with the words ‘Take Notice’, reminding admirers of this new temple of trade not to forget about London’s poor.
