Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1829
Merchant Taylor 's School
Merchant Taylor's School was founded in 1561 by members of the Merchant Taylor's Company, although the building depicted here was built by Robert Hooke after the original burned down in the Great Fire of London. Although the emphasis in this drawing is on the architecture, the artist has included two schoolboys standing by the entrance at the right. This drawing was prepared for an illustration in Thomas Hosmer Shepherd's London in the Nineteenth Century (1829). In 1875 the school moved out of its Suffolk Lane premises to Goswell Street, and in 1933 moved out of the City to Northwood.
