New London Bridge
The construction of John Rennie’s New London Bridge began in 1824, and was opened on 1st August 1831. During construction several grand ceremonies were held, including the procession of the Lord Mayor’s barge under the unfinished central arch on 9 November 1827. Thomas Hosmer Shepherd drew the event for the topographical publication Metropolitan Improvements (1827), showing the bridge arches held up with scaffolding and topped with flags, while spectators crowd on top of the structure and take to the water to cheer the procession. The event was repeated the following year.
