St Mary's, Whitechapel
The original thirteenth-century St Mary’s (a chapel of ease subsidiary to the parish church of St Dunstan’s, Stepney) was apparently whitewashed, and it is from this that Whitechapel Road and the wider area got its name. This wash drawing – the design for an engraving in Thomas Hosmer Shepherd and James Elmes’s ‘London in the Nineteenth Century’ – shows the late seventeenth-century structure (no longer standing); ‘a coarse and very irregular building’ according to Elmes.
