Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1821
Lambeth Church
Although the tower of St Mary's Lambeth was built in the twelfth century, the body of the church was rebuilt and enriched over the subsequent centuries, giving it the rather disjointed appearance that is recorded in this wash drawing by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (a design for his book, 'London in the Nineteenth Century). The railing around the churchyard is shown undergoing repairs. A man up a ladder is using a plum line to check that his work is straight, while another struggles under the weight of carrying replacement railings. The church was deconsecrated in the 1970s and now houses the Garden Museum.
