Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1830
The New Athenaeum
The Athenaeum club was founded in 1824; a private members club for those with some distinction in science, literature of the arts, it moved into its specially built clubhouse at the corner of Pall Mall and Waterloo Place in 1830. The building, designed by the young architect Decimus Burton, reflects the club name with a statue of Athena over the portico and a copy of the Parthenon Frieze (recently arrived from Athens to the British Museum) around the top of the facade. This wash drawing by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd is the design for his book, ‘London in the nineteenth century’.
