Bloomsbury Square

The statue of the radical Whig politician, Charles James Fox was executed by the sculptor Richard Westmacott and erected in Bloomsbury Square in 1816. This wash drawing, engraved for Thomas Hosmer Shepherd’s ‘London in the Nineteenth Century’ (1829-31), forms a pair with a print of Russell Square with a statue of the Duke of Bedford (also by Westmacott). In each image, a solitary smartly dressed gentleman in contrasted with more lowly figures. Here it is a pair of street cleaners, while the Russell Square print depicts a large group of people watching street entertainers.
