Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1830
Broad Street, St Giles
The tower of the Church of St Giles in the Fields is seen here in a view west up Broad Street (High Holborn). It was built in the 1730s and is said to be the first English church built in the Palladian manner of architecture. Just left of centre is a shop with the sign, ‘oil and colour manufactory’, in front of which is a horse pulling a covered wagon with ‘Brown and Nakin’ painted on the side. This is the premises of the Colourman Thomas Brown at 163 High Holborn, who claimed in 1842 to have supplied paints to all of the Royal Academy Presidents (The Art Union, January 1842, p.18).
