The interior of the Lyric Theatre
In this sketch Grace Golden depicts the audience at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith. Theatre-goers can be seen seated together on a balcony and standing in the doorway. While the figures in the immediate foreground are only very loosely sketched in, those further away from the viewer are portrayed in more detail.
Designed by the architect Frank Matcham, the Lyric Theatre was built in 1895 as an opera venue. Although theatres faced competition from cinemas during the 20th century - when Golden was active - London remained a capital renowned for its theatrical productions.
This drawing is one of a large number by the artist in the Museum's collection. Golden often depicted lively interiors, such as music halls and theatres.
