The criers bought apples from London markets, and sold them from barrows in summer and throughout winter for around a penny for a dozen. In winter the criers roasted apples over charcoal in a tin plate (Itinerant Traders of London. Description of the Plates, representing the itinerant traders of London in their ordinary costume, with Notices of the remarkable places given in the background. London, 1804).
