Strawberries (Covent Garden)
Image of a strawberry seller, with Covent Garden market in the background. Published as part of a series of thirty-one prints after drawings by William Marshall Craig and engraved by Edward Edwards. See Summary at record 35.96.
Strawberries were cried by both men and women in June in London suburbs. They were sold for sixpence in pottles that held less than a quart. The crier added one penny to the selling price for the value of the pottle that was refunded if the customer returned it. The criers' profit was between threepence and fourpence in the shilling (Itinerant Traders of London. Description of the Plates, representing the itinerant traders of London in their ordinary costume, with Notices of the remarkable places given in the background. London, 1804).
