Suspension Bridge, Hammersmith
Hammersmith Suspension Bridge. Signed and dated in pencil at bottom right. A general view of William Tierney Clark's chain bridge across the Thames, the first of its kind built in London. Note the massively rusticated piers which support the Tuscan archways. The bridge was opened to the public on 6th October 1827 and cost over £45,000. It replaced in 1884-7 by the present structure.
