Holder, helmet crest holder
Iron helmet crest support for a Roman soldier's helmet. It has one central tongue for slotting into the socket on the top of the helmet and with the other two arms perpendicular to it curving to fit the shape of the bowl. This arrangement affords the optimum stability for a crest. The main upright is rectangular in section. The tops of the U-shaped arms, which would have held the crest, are curled over outwards. Helmet crests were made from hair or feathers and were designed to make soldiers look more impressive, but they needed to be detachable as they were not worn for battle.
