Strap fitting, lorica segmentata hinged strap fitting
Copper-alloy hinged strap fitting from Roman plate armour (lorica segmentata), still articulated (spindle and rivets are evidently of similarly-coloured metals), made of doubled-over sheet in the normal fashion. Unusually, there are small washers on either end of the hinge spindle. Whilst the fixed plate has squared corners, the free-moving element is rounded. Traces of linear decoration (on the long sides of both elements) remain on the upper surface of the object.
The item has been fitted with a piece of modern leather for display purposes. Rounded free elements from hinged strap fittings are known from Rheingönheim, Risstissen in Germany and linear decoration is not uncommon, for example at Kaiseraugst.
