Self-portrait of Sir George Robey
Sir George Edward Wade ( 1869-1954) who changed his name by deed poll to George Robey was a celebrated music hall entertainer and actor. He was known as the Prime Minister of Mirth. He appeared often in drag in elaborate costumes and was known for his double entendres. Having raised substantial amounts for was charities and canvassed for military recruitment during WWI he was appointed a CBE in 1919, and was knighted in 1954.
