The Lord Mayor's Dinner. At Guildhall, the ninth day of November.
In this print, the interior of the Guildhall is depicted during the Lord Mayor's dinner of 9 November 1828.
William Thompson, the newly elected Lord Mayor, is seated at the centre of the high table. An ironmaster and financier, Thompson's fortune was based on the iron industry. From 1821 until his death in 1833, he was an alderman of the City of London and was master of the Ironmonger's Company in 1829.
The Lord Mayor's dinner was a major event in the City's civic calendar and was famous for its many courses. In the foreground, part of the bill of fare can just be made out, beginning with two hundred tureens of the renowned turtle soup. Drinks included champagne, hock, claret, port and sherry.
This engraving by Sir George Scharf, artist and director of the National Portrait Gallery, is one of a number of views of the Guildhall interior in the Museum of London's collection.
