Bolt head, ballista bolt head
A square-sectioned iron ballista bolt-head with two possible nail holes in the circular socket. There are three rings forming a circular-sectioned solid baluster, bordered by incised lines, at the base of the head. Another set of rings run around above the mouth of the socket. A possible weld is visible on one face of the head.
Catapult machines (ballista) were used by the legions for firing arrows or bolts. Such machines were later installed on platforms over London's gateways.
