Rout at the Dowager Duchess of Portland
Guests are shown sitting in groups in a drawing room. A servant, who is being attacked by a dog, upsets a tray of drinks over two outraged elderly ladies.
Margaret Cavendish, Dowager Duchess of Portland (1714-1785) was, like her father the 2nd Earl of Oxford, an avid collector of books, pictures, sculpture, coins, medals, miniatures, jewellery and other 'objects d'art'. Her collection of shells was reckoned to be the largest in Europe. Most of this material was sold at auction in 1786.
