The Site of the Festival of Britain
This watercolour by William Palmer Robins ( 1882-1959) shows the construction of the South Bank embankment on marshy ground in preparation for the Festival of Britain of 1951.
In the foreground can be seen the Shot Tower. Built in 1826 the Tower was the only original building to remain on the South Bank site during redevelopment. For the festival it was converted into a radio and light beacon to draw people to the site but was subsequently demolished to make way for the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
