Sainfoid, Derby winner 1890
Souvenir handkerchief commemorating the 1890 Epsom Derby Race Winner ‘Sainfoin’.
Cream silk handkerchief with woodblock print, brown. In the centre is the image of a horse and jockey. Jockey’s sleeves and cap pencilled in yellow dye.
Printed underneath the image are the winners details; ‘SAINFOIN/ BY/ SPRINGFIELD – SANDA/ WINNER OF THE DERBY/ TRAINED BY J. PORTER. 1890. RIDDEN BY J. WATTS/ THE PROPERTY OF/ SIR J. MILLER.’
Image encircled by a decorative border consisting of vignettes with the information of previous winners, filling out into the border edge, with gaps reserved for future winners. Outer border edge vibrant red dye.
Printed centre bottom edge; ‘WINNERS OF THE DERBY. FROM THE COMMENCEMENT IN 1780'.
