Hermit, Derby winner 1867
Souvenir handkerchief commemorating the 1867 Epson Derby Race Winner ‘Hermit’.
Cream silk handkerchief with brown woodblock print, in the centre depicting the image of horse and jockey with his whip raised. The Jockey’s Jersey and cap have been pencilled with pink/purple dye.
Printed underneath the image are the winners details; ‘HERMIT/ WINNER OF THE DERBY/ TRAINED BY BOSS. 1867. RIDDEN BY J.DALEY/ THE PROPERTY OF/ MR H CHAPLIN.’
Encircling the horse and jockey is a symmetrical border depicting scenes of the spectators on race day at Epsom, with the viewing stand symmetrised on the inside corners of the border. Pale pink outer border edge.
