Contentment and Peace in Humble Life
Printed in red ink with a scene of peasants outside a cottage, this handkerchief is captioned 'Contentment and Peace in Humble Life'. The scene, and the verses printed above it, depict an idealised version of humble rural life, in which the peasant farmer and his family are contented with their lot. Such moral imagery, instructing people to maintain the existing social order, was common in the first half of the 19th century.
