The Absent-Minded Beggar

This type of printing was developed in 1875 by Robert Barclay and was originally for printing on tin. The poem was written by Kipling as part of the Daily Mail campaign to raise money for soldiers fighting in the South African War known as the Second Boer War (Oct 1899- May 1902) and caused a sensation. Kipling’s story was of the British ‘Tommy’ (private soldier) leaving dependants in need while fighting for the their country. Lily Langtry contributed to its popularity by reciting it on the stage at the Garrick Theatre. Proceeds made from the sales went to help soldiers and their families through the Absent Minded Beggar Relief Corps, raising over £340,000. Kipling was paid £250 for the poem, which he donated to the fund and he was also offered a knighthood, which he declined. ‘The Absent Minded Beggar’ remained popular during and after the three-year war and became a significant part of culture at the time. There were several printed versions of the Absent Minded Beggar. Another within the Museum of London’s collection is 2015.5/169; a monochromatic white cotton printed handkerchief, using printer’s ink, showing Kipling’s poem with a portrait of Lord Roberts. Published by The Graphic, a weekly illustrated newspaper (1869- 1932).
