Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1775-1785
Putney School
James Miller has depicted a summer's day in Putney with boys enjoying an informal game of cricket near Putney School, the building in the background.
A pile of discarded school uniforms is seen in the foreground, as the boys have donned their cricket whites for a game. While some of the boys prepare to bowl or bat, several of the players loaf around on the grass.
This is one of several drawings by Miller in the Museum's collection. Although no biographical details are known about the artist, James Miller is recorded as having exhibited at the Royal Academy during the 1780s.
