Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1795
White lead manufactory, Islington
The white lead manufactory in Islington was built by Samuel Walker & Co Yorkshire ironmongers with connections in the City. The offices were formerly the Rosemary Branch public house. In 1786 a windmill was erected to grind the lead and another was added around 1792, both with innovations associated with the more advanced northern technology and the distinctive feature of five sails. By 1811 these had been reduced to four. In the 1830s steam power made the mills redundant and they quickly fell into disrepair.
