The Philanthropic Reform in St. George's Fields
The Philanthropic reform in St. George's Fields. The aim of the Philanthropic Society, founded in 1788 was to reform young criminals and to improve the lot of convict's children. Robert Young, director of the reformatory believed that charity encouraged idleness and consequently boys were taught trades, shoe-making, printing and rope-making in the workshops to the right of the drawing, while girls were trained as domestic servants in the building beside the chapel. Attributed to 'R. Dighton' - inscribed verso. The drawing was engraved and published on 12th April 1814 by Laurie and Whittle.
