Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1809
The Painted Chamber, Westminster
Formerly a royal residence, known as the King's Chamber, the Painted Chamber formed part of the original Palace of Westminster. The old Palace, including the Painted Chamber, was destroyed by a fire in 1834.
This early nineteenth-century view contrasts the medieval chamber with more recent domestic buildings nearby. On the left, washer-women can be seen tending to their laundry. Renovations are taking place to the site and two workmen can be seen in the foreground.
Although Charles John Mayle Whichelo was principally a marine painter, he was also a topographical artist who specialised in watercolours. Shortly before this picture was painted, he illustrated 'Select Views of London and its Environs' (1804-1805). By 1812 Whichelo had exhibited his work at the Royal Academy and was described as 'Marine and Landscape Painter to HRH Prince Regent'.
