Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1804-1805
Carnaby Market near Golden Square
Together with his older brother John, Cornelius Varley was a well-known painter and draughtsman. Although the Varley brothers focused primarily on views of landscapes, they collaborated on the publication 'Etchings of Shipping, Barges, Fishing Boats and Other Vessels' (1809). As well as etchings, they also produced pen and crayon lithographs.
Carnaby Market, which closed in 1820, was situated close to the historic Golden Square in West London. In 'The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby', the nineteenth-century author Charles Dickens later described the square as 'not exactly in anybody's way to or from anywhere ... It is one of the squares that have been; a quarter of the town that has gone down in the world'.
