Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1836
Fishmongers Hall. taken from London Bridge.
This hand coloured etching shows a view of the south-east front of Fishmonger’s Hall from London Bridge. It was produced in 1836 two years after the opening of a new Hall designed by Henry Roberts, heavily assisted by Gilbert Scott, who actually produced the drawings, and built by Thomas Cubitt. The site of the Hall had not changed since 1434, namely next to London Bridge. This Hall remained until it was bomb damaged in 1940 and subsequently restored.
The Hall is home to the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers who are still very involved in the sale of fish in the City of London as well as in maintenance of fishing rights in the City of London.
Published by Ackermann this etching is representative of the high quality printing pioneered by this form. Its founder Rudolph Ackermann had died in 1834 but the publishing firm continued under his son George and his younger brothers.
