Lambeth Palace from Millbank

With the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral visible in the middle background and Grosvenor House in the left foreground, the artist chose the view from Millbank looking north-east to Westminster as the subject for his painting. Westminster Bridge and Lambeth Palace are also depicted in the background.

Boats populate the river and two men converse on the river bank, close to Grosvenor House which was the London residence of Sir Robert Grosvenor and his family until 1809 when it was knocked down. The house was built during the 1660s and had a walled front garden as well as a special passage along the riverfront.
