Signboard advertising the painter G. Buckley
This signboard was designed to advertise the activities of George Buckley who is described as being a portrait painter, designer and general artist. His studio is reflected in an ornate mirror which is flanked by two veiled beauties supporting a banner; cherubs also hold banderoles proclaiming the artist's talents. In 1858 a George Buckley, portrait painter, was recorded as residing at 48 Park Street, Islington. In his studio, Buckley is shown at his easel completing a painting of a man, possibly John Bright (1783-1870) who was a physician at Westminster Hospital. It seems as though the artist has been interrputed by the viewer, a potential client, who has caught a glimpse of his studio containing finished portraits and sculptures.
