Wig, court wig

Judicial wig of white and grey horsehair arranged into tight vertical curls handstitched onto an inner support layer of silk ribbons. The inner layer of ribbons provide the overall shape and fit and is made in two main sections. The top section is shaped closesly to the wearer's head while a second section extends into two panels that would sit on the wearer's shoulders and chest. Thin bands of vertical boning (of an unknown material) are sewn into the lining to support the shape of the front panels. The wig has a centre part that extends from the hairline at centre front to the crown. The crown is shaped into a circle that suggests a bald spot, but the area is filled in with very short cut horsehair.

The wig was donated with its original metal carrying/storage box.

The wig was worn by Barrister John Beavis Brindley, of Gray's Inn, first recorded of Hanley. The Museum of London contains a small collection of garments and accessories worn by Mr Brindley while in court (legal).
